What I Learned From My Father’s Death (A Personal Story)

No matter what happens in my life there is one thing I know for sure, “I will never ever give up.”

People who know me from my childhood are often amazed to hear that I am even alive, let alone actually living a great life. I like when these people from my past look at me in wonderment because I know I am serving as a reminder to them that anything is possible. I like to think I am a wake up call

You see, when I was 2 years old my father was in a car accident that left him quadraplegic. As an active, energetic medical doctor, having his body in this state was not easy for him. He was not able to work and provide for our family and we fell into complete poverty over the next few years. My dad became more and more depressed and two years after his accident he gave up and took his own life.

I still remember the funeral and touching his cold face. I remember everyone crying as I tried to make sense of what it all meant. The conclusions I came to have influenced my entire life.

I remember asking where he was and crying myself to sleep every night for over a year. Then one night I stopped crying. I knew he was not coming back and at 5 years old I made a decision to go on with my life and to never ever give up like he did, no matter what.

This was only the first of many tragedies and challenges I faced growing up but it is the one that shaped me the most. Nothing really seemed to faze me after that…I think part of me when numb but I also formed a deep seeded “knowing” that I could survive and endure anything life threw at me. That knowing has given me the strength and courage to face the rest of the challenges I have experience in my life.

I believe God gives us challenges so we can learn the lessons we are here to learn. We have free will and choice in how we respond to those challenges but we will never be given more than we can handle (even when it seems that way).

No matter how great your challenge is in life as long as you can trust that you are getting the lesson you need to get then you can walk through it gracefully. The bigger the challenge the more you will grow so be grateful for your challenges.

My dad was missing one thing, faith, and that is why he could not endure the challenge he was faced with. When we humble ourselves and turn to God for help we realize we were never alone on the journey at all. I wish my dad could have had this knowing deep in his heart so he never would have given up on life… it would have been great to have him around growing up.

I have learned a lot from my father’s suicide death. Most of all I learned that living without faith is a scary place to be when faced with big life challenges. I also learned that we can find strength to go on in life no matter what we are faced with, and when we triumph over adversity we become an example to others of what is possible in life. And when we chose to give up on life there is a far reaching impact on the people left. I learned from this and all my life experiences so far that I can not do it without God, and thinking I can is insane.

All I know is our time here is short. We don’t know how long we have to live this life and our choices moment by moment have an impact on ourselves and others. We are here to grow and learn and every experience if perfect. Like Steve Jobs says, we can’t connect the dots looking forward, we can only connect the dots looking back. When I look back at my life I can see how perfect is all has been for me to be right where I am today. Life is a mystery unfolding every moment!
